The Buddhist Association of Mount Putuo was founded in 1908, at that time it was called the "Education Association of Monks". In 1913, it was changed to the Buddhist Association of Mount Putuo. Later, its name was changed several times. In 1946, the Buddhist Association of China decided to establish the National Famous Mountain Buddhist Association. In June 1948, the Mount Putuo Branch of the Buddhist Association of China was established. In March 1962, the Buddhist Association of Mount Putuo was established, and a production committee was set up to implement the combination of agriculture and chan to achieve self-reliance. In 1979, the religious policy was implemented, and the monks returned to Mount Putuo one after another.

After the restoration of the Buddhist Association of Mount Putuo in March 1980, Venerable Miaoshan was elected as the chairman and created the "three unification" model, that is, the Buddhist Association of Mount Putuo based on "unified deployment in personnel, unified accounting in economy, unified planning in construction" as a basis, overall management temple affairs across the mountain. In April 2010, Venerabl Daoci was elected as the chairman, focusing on the style of practicing the dharma, temple construction, Buddhist culture construction, charity and public welfare throughout the mountain.

In recent years, under the leadership of the Party Committee Government at various levels, the Buddhist Association of Mount Putuo, with the support of the United Front Work Department of the Municipal Party Committee and the Putuoshan-Zhujiajian Administrative Committee, under the correct leadership of the Buddhist Association leadership, under the correct leadership of the leading group of the Buddhist Association of Mount Putuo, earnestly implement the party's religious policies, hold high the banner of patriotism and maintenance of Buddhism, and adhere to the collective management, democratic decision-making, and standardized management in accordance with the organizational management system of "one legal person, two-level management, and the combination of centralization and decentralization". In principle, implement "three unification" management of the temples throughout the mountain, vigorously promote the development of various Buddhist undertakings in Mount Putuo, actively promote the Buddhism culture of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, to make the country solemn and bring benefit and joy to sentient beings.
